Mainland Influence Over Hong Kong Television?

Li Ruigang, a Chinese media magnate and founder of the public equity firm China Media Capital, has been appointed vice-chairman of Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), Hong Kong’s leading free-to-air television station. The decision to bestow Li, who is described by the London-based Financial Times as “the most connected individual in Chinese media”, with executive power in the Hong Kong based broadcasting company despite his ineligibility for the position under Hong Kong’s broadcasting laws (due to his association with the advertising sector in China) raised questions over the rise of mainland Chinese influence over Hong Kong media and advertising.
